Baker Hughes: US rig count falls below 900
The US drilling rig count fell 6 units, reaching 898 rigs working for the week ended Sept. 6, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is down 150 units from the 1,048 rigs working this time a year ago.
The number of rigs drilling on land dropped 6 units week-over-week to a total of 870 units. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters was unchanged at zero units for the week. The number of rigs drilling offshore also was unchanged at 28.
US oil-directed rigs decreased by 4 from last week to reach 738 units. This time a year ago, 860 units were drilling for oil. Rigs targeting gas decreased by 2 units to reach 160 rigs, which was 26 fewer than were drilling for gas at this time a year ago.
Among the major oil and gas-producing states, Oklahoma dropped the largest number of rigs. At 75 rigs running, the count is 5 fewer than the previous week.
Texas dropped 3 rigs to reach 438 for the week. Alaska dropped a single rig to reach 8 rigs running.
Nine states remained unchanged this week, namely New Mexico, 108; Louisiana, 60; Wyoming, 36; Pennsylvania, 34; Colorado, 27; West Virginia, 19; California, 18; Ohio, 12; and Utah, 6.
North Dakota was the only state with an increase in rigs week over week. With an additional 3 rigs, the state is running 54 units for the week ended Sept. 6.
Canada’s rig count decreased by 3 units for the week. At 147 rigs, the count is 57 fewer than the 204 units drilling this week a year ago. With 102 rigs drilling, Canada’s oil-directed rigs dropped 3 units this week. Gas-directed rigs in Canada remained unchanged at 45.
