Kenya first exported oil
Kenya shipped to the world market of crude oil for the first time in its history. Thus, the country entered the group of oil exporting countries.
The first batch of Kenyan Turkana oil was purchased at an international auction by a Chinese company for $ 12 million. Oil is sent for refining to Malaysia.
The Kenyan authorities expected to start exporting oil in January-February 2019, but the logistics failed. There is no oil pipeline from the field, and first tankers had to deliver oil for storage to the oil tanks of a non-working refinery in the city of Mombasa. It was supposed to accumulate at least 400 thousand barrels of oil, which is enough to load an oil tanker for oil export.
The development of oil delivery from the field began in the summer of 2018, when the first 4 truck caravans departed from Turkana to the port of Mombasa as part of an early oil pilot scheme (EOPS). Kenya, waving the flag, excitedly promised every Kenyan the benefit of Turkana's oil revenues. According to plans, up to 110 tankers were supposed to transport about 2000 barrels per day.
Each oil tanker is capable of transporting 150 barrels / voyage of oil. Round trip time is about 10 days.
Kenyan authorities and authorities in the northern region of Turkana reached an agreement on the distribution of oil revenues. According to the law on the distribution of oil revenues, 75% of revenues from oil production and export will go to the government, 20% to the government of Turkana and 5% to the local community.
