RWE to develop 2GW wind and 300MW electrolyser project for Ludwigshafen chemical site
German utility RWE plans to work with chemicals company BASF to develop a 2GW offshore wind project that will provide the Ludwigshafen chemical site with green electricity from 2030.
The project includes a 300MW electrolyser for the production of green hydrogen. According to RWE, 20% of the green electricity from the new offshore wind farm will be used to power the electrolyser.
“The green hydrogen could be used by other industrial customers as well, which would save more than one million tonnes of CO2 each year,” RWE said.
“For this to succeed, we would like to start as soon as possible,” a spokesperson from RWE said.
The call for tenders, development of the wind farm, grid connection and construction process would take at least a total of seven years, the spokesperson continued. RWE plans to implement this project by 2030.
The project idea could result in the avoidance of around 3.8 million metric tons of CO2 emissions per year, of which 2.8 million tons would be realised directly at BASF in Ludwigshafen.
