Kozloduy

Bulgaria extends nuclear fuel supply contract with Russia

Bulgaria's only nuclear power plant, Kozloduy, has extended a contract with TVEL, part of Russian nuclear group Rosatom, to supply it with nuclear fuel up to the end of 2025, TVEL said on Wednesday.

State-owned Kozloduy operates two Soviet-made 1,000 MW nuclear reactors at a site on the Danube River bordering Romania. It has extended their lifespan by 30 years, saying they would be able to operate safely until 2047 and 2051, respectively.

Under the deal, TVEL will provide Kozloduy with complete fuel supplies, which means it will not have to buy enriched uranium on the market, TVEL said in a statement.

The Kozloduy plant produces about 30 per cent of Bulgaria's electricity.

The Balkan country is seeking investors for the construction of a second, 2,000 MW nuclear power plant at the Danube town of Belene, estimated to cost about 10 billion euros ($11.02 billion).
